Former Wichita State standout Dexter Dennis on brink of NBA after signing two-way contract
Dennis graduated from WSU and played four years with the Shockers from 2018-22. Former Wichita State basketball player, Dexter Dennis, is close to reaching the NBA after signing a two-way contract with the Dallas Mavericks. Dennis, who graduated from WSU and played for the Shockers from 2018-22, will likely spend most of his time with the Mavericks’ G League affiliate, the Texas Legends. The contract allows the Mavericks to keep Dennis within their organization without having him signed to a full-time contract. During his time at Wichita State, Dennis made 94 starts and scored 991 points. He also won the American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year in the 2021-22 season and helped the Shocker reach the NIT semifinals in 2019 and win the AAC championship with an NCAA tournament berth in 2021.

A former Wichita State men’s basketball standout is a step closer to reaching the NBA this weekend.
Dexter Dennis, who graduated from WSU and played for the Shockers from 2018-22, turned a training camp invitation from the Dallas Mavericks into a two-way contract, the NBA franchise announced on Saturday.
A two-way contract allows the Mavericks to keep Dennis within their organization without having him signed to a full-time contract. The 6-foot-5 wing will likely spend the majority of his time with the Mavericks’ G League affiliate, the Texas Legends, but Dennis is now one call away from the NBA stage.
The same athleticism and attention to detail on the defensive end clearly made an impression on Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd, as Dennis averaged 3.5 points in 9.6 minutes per game. He will wear the No. 17 jersey and is one of three two-way players for the Mavericks this season.
During his time at Wichita State, Dennis made 94 starts and scored 991 points over the course of four seasons. He notably won the American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year in the 2021-22 season and helped the Shockers reach the NIT semifinals in 2019 and win the AAC championship with an NCAA tournament berth in 2021.
He finished his collegiate career as a graduate transfer at Texas A&M, where Dennis averaged 9.5 points and 5.7 rebounds for the Aggies this past season that ended in the NCAA tournament.
After going undrafted, Dennis inked an Exhibit-10 contract with the Dallas Mavericks following NBA Summer League. He made the most the opportunity in training camp and in preseason, as Dennis joins former teammate Craig Porter (Cleveland Cavaliers) as former Shockers on two-way contracts on the cusp of NBA.
