A 29-year-old Wichita man riding a motorcycle was killed early Saturday morning in west Wichita after he ran a red light and hit a truck, a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper said.

Sage Joseph Duran died at the scene. The driver and passenger in a 2021 Dodge Ram were not injured.

The accident was reported at 1:55 a.m. at Central and I-235.

Duran, who was riding a 2022 Harley Davidson, was headed east on Central at a “high rate of speed” when he ran the red light at the I-235 north ramp, the trooper wrote in a crash report.

A 26-year-old Wichita man driving the truck, with a 22-year-old Wichita woman as a passenger, had a green light and was in the intersection turning from the north ramp to west on Central when he was hit by Duran in the intersection, the trooper wrote.

Duran “lost control and continued Eastbound. (He) struck the curb, a street sign, and a telephone pole before coming to rest in the roadway,” the trooper wrote. Duran was thrown from the motorcycle.

Wichita police said this accident would not be counted as one of the fatalities that the department tracks since it was investigated by the KHP. The department has reported 26 fatal accidents and 26 fatalities so far this year.
