Sedgwick County applying for grant to increase election security

Sedgwick County is applying for a grant that would allow it to make changes to increase election security. Sedgwick County, in Sedgwick, is applying for a grant from the Secretary of State's office to increase election security by adding key card access to important places such as the vote tabulation room, the election headquarters where votes are counted on election night, and the warehouse where the voting equipment is stored. If the county gets the grant, it will also add extra fencing inside the election warehouse and separate the equipment from the warehouse office. The proposed improvements would take about $41,000 and 90% of those expenses will be reimbursed if the county receives the grant.

"We are highly secure as it is but we have several areas that we could improve upon including key card access to our vote tabulation area and our election central," said Sedgwick County Election Commissioner Laura Rainwater.

Rainwater says if the county gets the grant it will add key card access to important places like the vote tabulation room, the election headquarters where votes are counted on election night, and the warehouse where the voting equipment is stored. It will also add extra fencing inside the election warehouse. She says this will add another level of security and separate the voting equipment from the warehouse office.

"We are so secure. If people are gonna try to break in they're gonna get caught. This is just to be proactive," explained Rainwater.

Right now those rooms are under a lock and key and everyone who enters has to physically sign their name on a nearby piece of paper to document it. There are also cameras placed all over the election office which provide video surveillance 24/7.

Rainwater says there hasn't been any reason to need to increase security. No one has broken in or tried to tamper with the election, instead she wants to do everything she can to make sure voters feel confident when they turn in their ballots.

She explains the grant would come from the Secretary of State's office through the, "Help America Vote Act."

With the planned improvements Rainwater estimates it would take about $41,000. However if the county gets the federal grant up to 90% of those expenses will be reimbursed.
